Ernest Rady
Community leader Ernest Rady has given us a rare opportunity to hear how he has succeeded in multiple businesses over his career. We will depart from our typical CEO Forum format by making this session much more interactive. Mr. Rady’s prepared remarks will be brief, focused on the highlights of his career (below) and on a recent event in his life that emphasizes the importance of personal security. He has asked that after his opening comments we change to a Q&A mode for the rest of the session. At that point, you’ll have the unusual chance to ask Ernest about such areas as: his early steps as an entrepreneur, his vision vs. his actual results, some major strategic choices, the important factors in growing from start-up to multi-billion size, and keys to his success across industries (both managing and investing). In addition, perhaps his views on the future of the business environment and his vision for his major philanthropies, such as Rady Children’s Hospital and the UCSD Rady School of Management.
Background
In 1966, Ernest Rady moved to San Diego from Canada and founded American Assets Inc., a privately held conglomerate where he controls and manages a group of companies involved in financial services, investment management and real estate. Mr. Rady also founded Westcorp, A NYSE traded financial services holding company headquartered in Irvine, CA which was sold to Wachovia, where he was a member of the company’s board of directors and chairman of both Wachovia’s consumer finance division and California banking division. Mr. Rady’s previous business endeavors include being a principal shareholder in a distributorship of Anheuser Busch products in San Diego, in a company that owned radio stations and telecommunications towers, and five independent oil and gas companies which resulted in one publicly traded company that was listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange. He was also an owner of the San Diego Sockers professional soccer team and a partner in the San Diego Padres. Volunteer work and charitable endeavors have continued to be a priority for Mr. Rady with the focus on education, health and wellbeing of children and scientific research. In recent years, Mr. Rady and the Rady Family Foundation donated significant funds to support both the UCSD School of Management and the construction of a new pavilion at Children’s Hospital. In appreciation of his support, UCSD named their management school the Rady School, and Children’s Hospital became Rady Children’s Hospital.
